The perfect travel itinerary includes not only where you should go but when you should go there. Peak seasons are great for once-in-a-lifetime events, but "dream season" is on the fringes when the weather is still perfect but the crowds (and costs $$$) aren't annoying.
Morocco is perfect for visiting in May. There are many great places to visit in Morocco, but not enough time to see them all in nine days. Between a northern vs. a southern circuit, we recommend exploring southern Morocco, because you'll be able to see three very different ways of life: city, desert, and mountains. Fly into Marrakech and take two different three-day excursions from there. Here's what you'll see:
3 Perfect Days in Marrakech:
Marrakech embraces its ancient heritage while offering modern edge, as well. This is a trip for those obsessed with culture, art, and exotic foods. Narrow passageways and bazaars are bright and vibrant with activity, while new museums and gardens house the latest works of indie Moroccan artists. Our one recommendation is to stay in a unique riad where you can feel like new-age royalty.
3 Perfect Days in Merzouga and Ouarzazate:
Merzouga is the real desert experience. You will see tour operators offering a 1-day desert experience from Marrakech, but you'll be getting the tip of the iceberg. In Merzouga, you'll see sand dunes as high as mountains, ride in a picturesque line of camels, surf the sands like giant waves, and sleep in a luxurious camp under a sky full of stars. Half-way between Marrakech and Merzouga, make sure to stop in Ouarzazate, perhaps for a night. Hollywood has a love affair with Ouarzazate, filming Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), and The Game of Thrones (2011) there. You can tour some of the film sets.
3 Perfect Days in the High Atlas Mountains:
Brave some crisper air for a hiking trip of a lifetime. The Berber people have lived in the Atlas Mountains since 3000 BC, and now it's your turn to see why. Hike with mules through lush valleys, pass bubbling streams, trailblaze through groves of juniper and pine, and awe at the spectacular snow-packed peaks. Stop in Berber villages to learn about their way of life before returning to the much-busier Marrakech to share their stories.
In just nine days, you'll see many sides to Morocco without feeling like you've been in transit the whole time. There's no need to fly to other cities and complicate your itinerary. Make Marrakech your home base, and enjoy a dream trip in May 2018 that will leave you full of stories to share for a lifetime.
